How to Use a DA Score When Evaluating Websites

    StreamlineBy StreamlineOctober 16, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

When comparing websites for guest posting, partnerships or link building, it is tempting to focus on one number. A da score can help you make an initial comparison, but it is not a verdict on a site’s quality or a promise that a backlink will improve rankings. The useful question is not simply whether a score is high; it is whether the site reaches the right audience and earns links in a credible way.

What a DA score tells you

Domain Authority (DA) is a metric developed by Moz to estimate a website’s relative ability to rank in search results. It is calculated from signals in a site’s backlink profile, including the number and quality of links pointing to it. Scores are reported on a 1–100 scale, with higher figures generally indicating a stronger link profile compared with other sites in the index.

DA is a third-party estimate, not a Google ranking factor. Google does not use Moz’s score to decide where a page appears in search results. It is best treated as a comparative research tool: useful for sorting a list of potential sites, but not sufficient to decide whether one is suitable. For a closer look at how the metric works, see this guide to the DA score.

    Why the number changes

A site’s DA can rise or fall even when its owner has made no major changes. The score is based on a changing index of the web, and the strength of other sites in that index also affects comparisons. New links may be discovered, lost links may be removed from the data, and Moz may update its link index or calculation model. A competitor’s profile changing can also influence relative scores.

For that reason, avoid reading a small movement as proof that a marketing campaign has succeeded or failed. Look at the trend over time and check whether it corresponds with meaningful changes in referring domains, relevant content or audience reach. A single snapshot gives limited context.

DA, DR and Authority Score are not interchangeable

Other SEO platforms offer similar-looking metrics. Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR) focuses on the strength of a site’s backlink profile, while Semrush Authority Score combines link data with other signals, such as organic traffic and signs of spam. Each tool uses its own data sources, definitions and methods, so their scores will not necessarily match.

When you compare sites, use the same platform and metric across the shortlist. If one site has a DA of 40 and another has a DR of 40, that does not mean they have equal authority. The numbers come from different systems. The goal is to use a metric consistently to help prioritize research, then verify the underlying evidence.

Check more than authority before building links

A high score cannot make an irrelevant or low-quality website a good link partner. Before committing time or budget, inspect the site itself and ask:

    • Is the audience relevant? A smaller publication that reaches your customers may be more valuable than a much larger site covering unrelated topics.

    • Does it attract real visitors? Review organic traffic estimates and the pages receiving visits. Sudden spikes, steep declines or traffic concentrated on unrelated topics deserve further investigation.

    • Are its links and content credible? Look for a natural range of referring websites, useful articles and clear editorial standards. A site publishing thin posts on every subject may offer little lasting value.

    • Does the proposed page make sense? A link should support the reader’s understanding, not appear only to manipulate a metric.

Traffic figures from SEO tools are estimates, so use them as clues rather than exact measurements. Where possible, compare several indicators and review actual pages. A thoughtful manual check can reveal problems that a summary score misses.

Use scores to prioritize, not to promise outcomes

For a practical workflow, first define the audience and purpose of the campaign. Build a shortlist of sites that cover the relevant subject, then compare their authority metrics within one tool. Next, inspect traffic, content quality, backlink patterns and the likely value of a placement. Keep notes on why each site qualifies, and revisit the list as your campaign develops.

It is also wise to assess the page and link in context. A mention on a focused article can introduce a business to interested readers, even if the host site has a modest score. Conversely, a link from a site with an impressive number may have little practical benefit if the subject and audience do not align. Avoid buying links solely to hit a score threshold or assuming that any placement will produce a ranking gain.

    Visibility depends on useful signals

Authority metrics are only one part of online visibility. For freelancers, a clear profile that explains services, experience and location can help potential clients determine whether someone fits a project. On Osdire, for example, adding a city and country can make a freelancer easier to find in location-based searches. A concise freelancer profile settings guide can help users understand how to update those details.

The same principle applies to evaluating websites: context matters more than a standalone number. A DA score is most useful when it helps you ask better questions about links, content and audience—not when it replaces that judgment. Combine it with evidence of relevance and genuine reach, and your marketing decisions will be more grounded.
